Dichroic glass luminous qualties make an excellent and unique medium for jewelry. Dichroic means two colors, the glass appears to be different colors when viewed at different angles or in varying light conditions. It reflects one color when light is reflected from the surface and transmits a different color when light passes through it. It can make photographing pieces with dichroic glass in it difficult!
Dichroic glass today originates from the space program and we can thank ‘Thin Film Physics’ for this beautiful and functional product. It is a costly process that involves cleaning the glass to the molecular level and coated with thin films of elements such as titanium, magnesium, zirconium and many others. The elements are then vacuum deposited onto the glass. Often up to 30 layers are used and the elements used are what give each sheet the colors in the final product. The time required in the vacuum vessel can take up to two and half hours. Other uses for dichroic glass have been used in the face shields for space suits, optical and security industries.
Sheets of dichroic glass are sold to the artist which are then cut by the artist to fit the design and then fused in a kiln for 8 hours or more and the final product is the beautiful fused pendants you can see made by Coleen Goralski. They are extremely durable and nearly indestructible.
A great gift idea! What I did with some special people in my life was to purchase a really nice chain for them one year with one pendant and each year or special occasion I give them a new pendant so they have many choices in their wardrobe and can simply change the pendant or even a wire wrap piece for the same chain. Great gift giving idea and they loved it and look forward to it every year now!
